Iowa is home to many wonderful small towns, but there are a few that are just a tad above the rest.

Last year, we dove into the worst rural town in the Hawkeye State.

By the way, "worst" rural town is somewhat subjective. The Youtuber put together a series of videos of the "worst" rural towns in each state. Each state has it's own corresponding video.

When this guy says "worst" he actually means most affordable.

You can read more about this here.

Another survey came out that attempted to determine the worst small town in the state. This one is no surprise at all. It also just so happens to be the sight of one of the most gruesome crimes in Iowa history.

The same publisher put together another list of the BEST small towns in Iowa. Some of them, you probably have never heard of! The data points were similar to the "worst small town" study.

Some of the biggest determining factor in figuring out the "best small town" are as follows:

  • Population Density
  • Low Unemployment Rates
  • Costs of Housing
  • Insurance Rates
  • Commute Times
  • Education

The best of the best had to have an overall better score within all of these different data points. Homesnacks only took into consideration towns that had populations that fell within the 5,000 to 2,000 total people.

So there are probably plenty of MUCH smaller towns that might be a bit better. Just don't shoot the messenger!

This study determined that Huxley, IA is the best small town in the state. Huxley has a population of just over 4,000 and just so happens to be the hometown of Riley Flynn from the tv show 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer.'

The town is commonly referred to as the "Heart of the Prairie." It is located in Story County and is not too far from Ames.

Here is a full list of the top ten best small towns in the state:

  1. Huxley
  2. Earlham
  3. Atkins
  4. Solon
  5. Roland
  6. Walford
  7. Fairfax
  8. Dike
  9. University Heights
  10. Lawton
