The official start of spring has finally arrived except the weather hasn't quite caught up yet for most of the northern half of Iowa.

Just last week, various parts of eastern Iowa saw anywhere from 3-5 inches of snow as we headed into last weekend. Hopefully, *fingers crossed* we won't have to worry about that anymore for the remainder of spring. Sadly, that's not always how it goes in Iowa. We know there are really 11 seasons in Iowa instead of 4. They go something like this:

Winter, fools spring, second winter, spring of deception, third winter, mud season, actual spring, summer, false fall, second summer, actual fall.

I'd say we're somewhere between third winter and mud season right now. I don't mind the snow as much as the cold weather. I just hope to not end up in a situation like I did back on the coldest day of the year. That was the worst start to a morning you could probably have. I know my dog wouldn't mind playing in the snow a few more times this spring but I'm looking forward to putting the shovels away for the year.

Iowa's 10 Snowiest Cities for 2024

Homesnacks used Saturday Night Science and Oceanic Atmospheric Administration,  to discover the 10 snowiest cities in Iowa for 2024. Hopefully, you can put your snow boots away for the rest of the year but if you live in one of these cities, you might want to keep them close by for another month.

• 10 - Storm Lake, average annual snowfall: 36 inches
• 9 - Spencer, average annual snowfall: 36.2 inches
• 8 - Charles City, average annual snowfall: 36.4 inches
• 7 - Algona, average annual snowfall: 36.5 inches
• 6 - Dubuque, average annual snowfall: 37.5 inches
• 5 - Estherville, average annual snowfall: 37.9 inches
• 4 - Sheldon, average annual snowfall: 38.4 inches
• 3 - Decorah, average annual snowfall: 38.7 inches
• 2 - Mason City, average annual snowfall: 38.9 inches
• 1 - Clear Lake, average annual snowfall: 39.8 inches.

While just about everyone is ready for constant temperatures above 60 degrees, last week was a perfect example of how you never know what you're going to get when it comes to spring in Iowa.

Least Amount of Snow

Homesnacks also found the 3 cities that receive the least amount of snow in Iowa.

• 3 - Keokuk, average annual snowfall: 21.3 inches
• 2 - Fairfield, average annual snowfall: 20.9 inches
• 1 - Fort Madison, average annual snowfall:18.2 inches

If you live in Fort Madison or if someone you know lives in Fort Madison, you can tell them "It must be nice" the next time you're grabbing the snowblower/shovel to clear off your driveway.
