Sweet New Bakery and Coffeehouse Opens In Eastern Iowa

A sweet spot in Eastern Iowa that somehow strikes the balance between what is old and what is new is celebrating its grand opening soon.

Located right in downtown Independence, is a new and rather sweet business that has taken the town by storm.

Gedney Bakery and Coffeehouse is described as "more than a place to enjoy delicious baked goods and specialty coffees – it's a tribute to the rich heritage of our town."

They offer up freshly made pastries and sweets. Look at how absolutely scrumptious this new bakery is!

The team behind this delicious new business announced that they will be officially having a grand opening next month.

Gedney's is located at 118 First Street East in Independence.

Grand Opening Details

The new business has been keeping customers updated on the big moves that they are making.

This grand opening celebration is set to take place over the course of two days.

Friday, May 10th at 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Saturday, May 11th at 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM

According to the business' social media, the weekend will include "scrumptious treats and fabulous prizes."

Gedney's History

When I first heard the name of this new bakery and coffee spot, I was curious as to the meaning of it.

Is it owned by the Gedney family? 

Well, the Gedney name has a deep, historic meaning especially here in Eastern Iowa.

Gedney Bakery & Coffeehouse is actually named after the Gedney Hotel in Independence. This hotel burned down in 1945.

The Gedney Fire caused about $300,000 in damage, which is $4 million by today's standard, according to historians.

"...our bakery and coffeehouse is a celebration of the spirit of Independence, echoing the elegance and warmth of the bygone era."
