Record Heat Scores Victory Over Waterloo Schools

The stifling heat is causing multiple schools in the area to dismiss early or cancel classes altogether!

On Wednesday, May 11th, Iowa faced unprecedented high temperatures for this time of year These sweltering numbers actually caused many areas throughout northeastern Iowa to break some records!

Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Iowa City, and Waterloo all broke or tied previous temperature records yesterday.

Cedar Rapids and Waterloo broke records that were more than one hundred years old. Waterloo reached a record temp of 94 degrees on Wednesday. The majority of the state is also operating under an excessive heat warning as well today.

Multiple schools in the Cedar Valley are dismissing early to help kids and teachers beat the heat.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck school officials announced that students would be dismissed two hours early due to this awful heat.

All three Waterloo high schools have made a similar call today.

The following schools received notification that they would be dismissing early Thursday morning:

Waterloo East High School

Waterloo Expo Alternative High School

Waterloo West High School

Elk Run Preschool

A few hours after this news dropped, Waterloo Schools officials announced that these temperatures would keep students out of school until Monday.

All Waterloo Schools will be closed on Friday, May 13th due to the warm weather. Officials say that this will be marked as a snow make-up day or no school day on the calendar.
