The number of coronavirus cases continued to trend upward in Black Hawk County and across Iowa Wednesday.

Figures released by Black Hawk County Health officials showed the local 14-day positivity rate had soared to 25.7%. According to the numbers, COVID-19 activity in the county reached an all-time high with 308 new cases and 48 new recoveries.

The total number of local cases increased to 8,210 since the pandemic began in March. County health officials reported 4,944 recoveries and 110 deaths.

Data from the Iowa Department of Public Health Wednesday showed 4,764 additional cases, the fifth consecutive day the state reported more the 4,000 new cases in a 24-hour period. There were 26 more deaths statewide, increasing the total to 1,898.

Hospitals and health care workers across Iowa are currently stressed by the rising numbers. The 24-hour numbers released Wednesday showed 230 people had been admitted to Iowa hospitals, the highest-single-day number since the pandemic began. The state's coronavirus dashboard showed 1,190 patients were hospitalized for COVID-19 treatment.
