Sheriff’s Deputies Foil Two Rural Black Hawk County Burglaries
Three people from Waterloo were taken into custody following two separate robberies in rural Black Hawk County a few hours apart.
According to sheriff's officials, deputies thwarted both crimes.
Two of the suspects, 35-year-old Montana Gunhus and 24-year-old Justice Goodwin, are accused of burglarizing a rural residence on S. Canfield Road in southeast Black Hawk County late Wednesday evening. Sheriff's officials said the home had been the target of prior burglaries over the past two weeks and a deputy was in the area as part of the investigation.
According to sheriff's officials, the deputy stopped a white pick-up truck that was seen leaving the home in a hurried manner after dark. Authorities said there was property in the vehicle that the occupants had just taken after breaking into the home, along with a 9mm pistol.
The pick-up's driver and passenger were both taken to the Black Hawk County Jail. Gunhus was booked on the following charges: second-degree burglary, possession of a firearm as a felon, possession of burglary tools, driving while barred and driving while suspended. Goodwin was charged with third-degree burglary.
The second burglary happened Thursday around 2 AM in Washburn.
According to sheriff's officials, 40-year-old Jeffrey Goddard was arrested after a deputy spotted a suspicious vehicle parked near the self-storage units on U.S Highway 218/La Porte Road. Authorities said the deputy investigated and found that Goddard had just broken into the storage units and stole property, which was in his car.
Goddard was arrested on the following charges in connection with the burglary: 3rd-degree burglary, possession of burglar tools, driving while barred, driving while suspended and third-offense possession of a controlled substance-methamphetamine.
