Prescribed Burn Being Conducted In Cedar Falls

Cedar Falls city officials are planning to do some intentional burning this week, if the weather allows.
The Parks and Public Works staff will be working with Cedar Falls public safety officers to conduct a prescribed burn within the boundaries of Prairie Lakes Park.
The prescribed burn is scheduled for this week. If the weather does not allow for a burn, city officials said the burn will take place next week.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is also planning to do simular burns at several locations this spring. Wildlife management areas scheduled for burns are: Restoration March in Floyd County; Sweet March, Aldo Leopold, Heffernan and Walnut Bend in Bremer County; Upper Wapsi and Wapsi Flats in Chickasaw County; Big Marsh, West Fork Access, Lower West Fork and Blackmun Prairie in Butler County; and Cedar Rock and Troy Mills in Buchanan County.
The DNR's prescribed burns are typically done between late March and early May on days the weather allows. They usually begin mid to late morning and are completed by late afternoon or early evening.
According DNR officials, planned burns are used to improve wildlife habitat, control invasive plant species, restore and maintain native plant communities and reduce wildlife potential. that will benefit wildlife and promote sustainable ecosystem services.
