
Iowa School District Uses AI to Detect Guns in Schools

Iowa School District is Using AI to Detect Firearms
Union Community Schools is Implementing ZeroEyes
Union Community Schools in La Porte City is one of the first schools in Eastern Iowa to implement a form of AI to help detect firearms in schools, according to KWWL.
How AI Gun Detection Works
In mid-March, a press release confirmed that the school district will be using an AI technology called ZeroEyes to help protect the staff and students from gun violence in the classroom.
"It is a privilege for the Union Community School district to be the only district in eastern Iowa to collaborate with a well-known, respected company like ZeroEyes to enhance our school environments," said John Howard, superintendent of UCSD.
"Our number one goal has always been and will continue to be, the safety and security of our staff and students."
What ZeroEyes Does and How It Works
AI-Powered Gun Detection Technology
ZeroEyes is an AI-based gun detection video analytics platform that has the full U.S. Department of Homeland Security SAFETY Act Designation.
The technology from ZeroEyes can analyze over three billion images A DAY from security camera footage. If a firearm is detected, the software will notify local authorities within seconds.
Which Iowa Schools Will Use ZeroEyes?
Officials confirmed that this software will be used in all four of the schools at Union CSD.
"Every student deserves a safe learning environment," said Mike Lahiff, CEO and co-founder of ZeroEyes.
"It's inspiring to see communities such as Union Community School District emphasize the importance of advanced security methods through the deployment of proactive measures such as ZeroEyes."
