Popular Lake in Iowa Named The Prettiest Lake in the State

If you're familiar with state monikers, you are likely aware it's not Iowa, but our neighbors to the north, Minnesota, that are known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes."

That doesn't mean Iowa is without lakes. Sure, we don't have 10,000, we have about 65, but we do have our own Great Lakes!

Of our 65-ish lakes, 34 are natural lakes (not man-made), and now Reader's Digest has chimed in on what they think is our prettiest lake.

While the "prettiest" anything is quite subjective, I actually agree with Reader's Digest's choice here.

I think they nailed it. They avoided an easy pick, Lake Okoboji, part of the above-mentioned Iowa Great Lakes chain.

While Okoboji is beautiful and a great revenue generator for Iowa in the form of tourist dollars, it's also a little... obvious.

Instead, the publication selected a central Iowa lake in its namesake city, Clear Lake, as the prettiest in the Hawkeye State.

Clear Lake Beats out All Others in Iowa

Iowa's prettiest lake selection is one you certainly could debate. Perhaps it helps that Buddy Holly played his final show at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, and the city has become somewhat synonymous with that.

Reader's Digest, however, didn't mention Buddy in their write-up up which, in part, says,

Stunning sunsets are just the beginning of what you’ll find at this Iowa gem.

And they point out the catch of the day isn't bad either,

Anglers will find a plethora of walleye, yellow bass, and channel catfish here.
