It's always an interesting day in Cedar Falls. All across the Downtown district, there has been some unique murals by some of the established stores since spring. All of these pieces of art have one goal in mind; to celebrate everyone getting back together again.

As you drive into Downtown Cedar Falls you can't help, but gawk at these larger-than-life murals. Photos from the past propped up along the brick walls of the Cedar Falls of our present.

Nine murals of old photos have been put up all across the downtown district. A University of Northern Iowa graduate student is behind all of these huge murals. This is Isaac Campbell's master's thesis and also an attempt to promote "togetherness" as we face the (hopefully) end of the COVID pandemic.

The hub of this project is at the old Scratch Cupcakery. Across the building is the largest photo in the series. Next to it is a sort of mission station that explains the idea behind the project, which is aptly called "Getting Back Together." All of these murals are made from flour, paper, and water which are meant to "disappear over time."

Each mural has a QR code to correspond to the specific photo depicted in the piece. It gives information about the project and the photo. All of the photos are of Iowa residents, for Iowa residents.

Luckily, I was able to capture a majority of the art pieces throughout the area. See if you can spot some of the others that I missed.

University of Northern Iowa Murals in Downtown Cedar Falls

UNI grad student Isaac Campbell wanted to do something unique for his master's thesis. All across Downtown Cedar Falls are murals of old photographs. They are plastered onto the walls of fixtures in Downtown Cedar Falls with flour, water, and sugar. Nine murals decorate Downtown Cedar Falls. Let us know if you can spot them all!

Visit 939 Iowa

Two college sophomores from the University of Nebraska at Omaha are traveling across Iowa with the goal to visit all 939 of the towns in the Hawkeye State. They've already visited twenty towns so far, and they've only been exploring Iowa for a week!
