Is It Legal To Spread Ashes At the Iowa State Fair?

As an Iowa transplant, I just love going to the Iowa State Fair. This is my second summer in the Hawkeye State and I have always enjoyed my brief visits to the Des Moines Fair.

Taking place from August 11th to the 21st, this fair is oftentimes referred to as one of the best in the country.

However, I came across a video that is making me reevaluate every single step I have ever taken at this nationally acclaimed fair.

The video I discovered came from a morning falling down a rabbit hole on the Iowa Subreddit. In this short twelve second clip, an older woman in an electric chair/scooter can be seen leaving a trail of ASHES behind her.

It's clear from the video that the woman had dropped the ashes a few feet along the hard concrete.

Can I Spread Ashes At the Iowa State Fair?

According to a website called The Living Urn,

"The Administrative Code in the state of Iowa states that scattering ashes is subject to any applicable local ordinances or cemetery rules. The state law also prohibits you from scattering ashes on public property or on private property without permission from the property owner. "

Well, it's not a definite "no" necessarily...

After taking a scan of the Iowa State Fair's frequently asked questions page, there's nothing there that says you CAN'T make this your final destination.

But I also don't think this would be considered a "frequently asked question."

Food and sealed bottles are allowed on the fairgrounds, so I guess there's a very clear jump to make that ashes are also allowed in as well.

I found this on Reddit under the Subreddit "trashy" posted by a user named LeftoverTunaSalad.

I don't necessarily think its TRASHY, but I do think its a bit unusual.
