Iowa's Tallest Building is Something Straight Out of the NYC Skyline
Iowans are used to small towns and farmland, not necessarily huge skyscrapers.
Approximately 85% of Iowa is farmland, so outside of cities like Des Moines, Waterloo, and Cedar Rapids, momentous buildings are somewhat hard to find.
However, I did some digging and found the tallest building in Iowa.
Unsurprisingly, it is in the Hawkeye State's capital city.
Located in Des Moines, Iowa 801 Grand is officially the tallest building in the entire state.
A Little About 801 Grand in Des Moines
This building was completed back in 1991, according to reports. 801 Grand was designed by the architectural firm of Hellmuth Obata and Kassabaum of St. Louis.
If you were to stand at the very top off 801 Grand, you'd be 630 feet in the sky AND 44 stories above Des Moines.
Not the best idea if you're afraid of heights...
The building has 1,142 windows and is approximately 920,000 gross square feet, according to the official 801 Grand website.
There are more than two thousand stairs in the entire skyscraper!
Who Owns This Building?
801 Grand is owned by a Fortune 500 global financial company called the Principal Financial Group (Principal).
In addition, the building is managed by Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL).
So, What Is It Made Of?
It takes 83,700 tons of concrete, 5,559 tons of structural steel, 3,100 tons of reinforcing steel, and to seal the building; 5,500 square feet of copper.
