A Waterloo man has been given a 10-year prison sentence for causing a three-hour standoff with local police in 2019.

Earlier this month, 71-year-old Greg Nelson filed written pleas of guilty to four counts in connection with case. Nelson was charged with two counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a felon in possession of a firearm and assault on peace officers with a weapon.

Waterloo police responded to a report of a disturbance at the Walnut Court Apartments, 315 Walnut St., on Dec. 4, 2019. Officials said they attempted to make contact with Nelson after officers arrived, but he refused to respond to any orders. According to police, officers heard gunshots coming from inside Nelson's apartment while they were trying to persuade him to come out.

Officers secured the area and closed off several blocks of city streets in the neighborhood surrounding the apartment complex. The Boys and Girls Club of the Cedar Valley, East High School and several businesses were placed on lockdown during the incident. The Waterloo Police Tactical Unit was activated to assist officers at the scene.

According to police, Nelson continued to fire a weapon from inside the apartment while officers continued to talk to him. Officers finally gained entry into Nelson's apartment brought him out safely.

No injuries were reported.
