John Deere Waterloo Hit with New Round of Job Cuts
Unfortunately, another round of layoffs is hitting John Deere workers in Waterloo.
This news came after the layoffs were reported to the Iowa Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN).
The Iowa WARN Act requires that any and all employers of more than a hundred employees give 60 days' written notice when there is a mass layoff.
John Deere In Waterloo Faces Another Round of Layoffs
The holiday season is a difficult time of the year for anyone to be without a job, but it's unfortunately the time when we really do start to see a large number of layoffs.
According to the report from Iowa WARN, John Deere Waterloo Works will have another round of mass layoffs in the new year. The affected employees were notified about these job losses on December 3rd.
In a statement from the company and a report from KCRG, 112 employees will be facing, "indefinite layoff effective Jan. 3.”
2024: A Challenging Year for John Deere Workers
At the beginning of 2024, the Midwest manufacturing giant employed approximately 5,500 people in their Waterloo location, according to reports.
On April 29th, 2024, that number shrunk significantly.
Waterloo happens to be the largest of the company's tractor production factories.
308 production employees at the plant were placed on "indefinite layoff" in April.
"Each John Deere factory balances the size of its production workforce with the needs of the individual factory to optimize the workforce at each facility," officials said in a statement.
Breaking Down the John Deere Waterloo Works Layoffs
All of this data collected is based off of the latest Iowa WARN reports.
Those layoffs didn’t taper off when summer hit. Instead, they resumed with a vengeance in June and July, with 916 workers losing their jobs across the Ankeny, Waterloo, Urbandale, Moline, East Moline, Dubuque, and Johnston locations.
In June, Waterloo workers were hit with two rounds of layoffs, resulting in 241 people losing their jobs by the end of the month.
By the close of summer, another 349 John Deere Waterloo Works employees were let go, bringing the total to 590 layoffs in Waterloo alone during those months.
As we approach 2025, more than 1,010 employees at the John Deere Waterloo plant will have lost their jobs over the past twelve months.
