Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine I'd be writing this...It turns out that Iowa has a strong connection with internet culture and it started all the way back in the 1920s.

One of the easiest and popular ways to communicate a funny idea in the 21st century is a meme. It's become so popular that board games have been created and classes have been taught on the subject.

The very first meme might just have been created in Iowa. A few years back, someone on social media shared what they thought was the first recorded meme.

For those not up to date with the latest internet and pop culture slang; the definition of a meme is an amusing or interesting picture, video, etc., that is spread widely through the Internet.

If you're trying to figure out what a meme is, just think about grumpy cat.

The old-time meme started getting attention on the internet in 2018 when a Tumblr account posted this interesting find. As people on the internet are wont to do, new captions and alterations were being made to the image to make it apply to present-day culture.

This comic was published in a 1921 issue of the University of Iowa's satirical magazine 'The Judge.' The original meme was credited to another college magazine called the 'Wisconsin Octopus' but for the rest of my life I will continue to say that the very first meme was created right here in the great state of Iowa.

Hilarious Iowa DOT Signs

Anyone else share a sense of humor with a state's Department of Transportation? Just me? Well, every Monday the Iowa Department of Transportation puts up a sometimes hilarious, sometimes straightforward message on their road signs across the state. This is called "message Monday" and Iowa DOT tries to entertain and educate drivers through these signs. Here are just a few of our favorites.
