Should More Women Consider Moving to Iowa?
While America has come a long way in terms of gender equality it's important to remember America isn't where it needs to be. There is a lot more progress that needs to be made and hopefully will be made very soon.
If we talk about the workplace, it's no secret that on average, men make more money. According to Catalyst, in the year 2020, women earned 83% of what men did during that time. That alone is something that needs to be addressed and progressed for the better, as soon as possible. If women in America would like a more level playing field, moving to Iowa might be a good place to start.
Wallet Hub has studied every state in the U.S, using different factors such as the gap between female and male executives, education and health, the disparity in unemployment rates for women and men, and women with political influence, to name a few. It turns out, that Iowa is a pretty good place for women to live and work.
Iowa was ranked the 12th best state when it comes to women's equality, according to Wallet Hub. You might have noticed that 2 sentences ago I wrote "Iowa is a pretty good place for women to live and work" and 12th out of 50 states is exactly that... Pretty good. Of course, Iowa needs to be better and hopefully will continue to work towards being better. Being in the top 12 is a much better feeling than being in the bottom 12, that's for sure.
Wallet Hub ranked Iowa 13th when it came to the workplace environment, 16th in education & health, and 12th in political empowerment. All are very solid numbers but there is still plenty of room for improvement. The state with the highest score was New Mexico and the lowest score belongs to Utah.
As a 31-year-old man, I can certainly say I have no idea what it's like being a woman in America. I can assume it's downright frustrating at times. I have a fiance who is about 6 years into her career and I can only hope for her sake and for every other woman in America, that we continue to progress and close this gap we have on women's equality.
Iowa is one of those states leading the charge as we are 1 of only 9 states with a female Governor, according to the Center for American Women and Politics. Hopefully, Iowa can continue to be an example for plenty of other states in America, while still learning and progressing for its own good.
