The Word Iowans Struggle to Spell the Most (Come On, People!)

I am not a good speller. I'll be the very first to admit. Chances are I've Googled how to spell half the words in the story... so far!

But... I don't think the word that Iowans have the most trouble with is really that hard to spell.

A little tricky? Maybe. But our most misspelled word? Come on, now!

Iowans Struggle with One Word More Than Any Other

With the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee just ending, the folks at wordunscrambler.pro wanted to find the most mispelled (that's a surprisingly tough word to spell) word in every state.

They used Google search data to aid them in finding our most misspelled words. Makes sense, I Google words I'm unsure how to spell often. It's very handy.

The word Iowans struggle with is a little... easy?

The word isn’t "a lot," which I see way too often spelled as one word. And it’s not "successful," Minnesota’s most misspelled word.

No, our Achilles heel is... through.

As in, over the hills and through the woods. Or, I need to read through the dictionary more.

Isn't through a pretty easy word to spell? I get it, "thru" would be a lot easier. Fewer random letters.

But, still!

Other States' Struggle Too

Iowans were not alone when it came to struggling with the word "through." It baffled residents in other states as well, though it wasn't the most mispelled word in any other state.

The results found the most mispelled words in America, based on searches, are:

1.      Definitely - 33,500 searches.

2.      Separate - 30,000 searches.

3.      Necessary - 29,000 searches.

4.      Believe - 28,500 searches.

5.      Through - 28,000 searches.

6.      Gorgeous - 27,000 searches.

7.      Neighbor - 25,500 searches.

8.      Business - 24 200 searches.

9.      Favorite - 23,000 searches.

10.   Restaurant - 22,500 searches.
