If You’re Not a Fan of Roundabouts, Avoid This Midwestern City at All Costs
When I moved to Iowa four years ago, I learned quickly that people here are passionate about Bush Lite, college sports, and roundabouts.
This is especially true in the Northeastern part of the state.
So, I did some digging and found out there is a single city in the Midwest that has more roundabouts than any other town in America.
The Science Behind Roundabouts
According to reports, there are approximately 8,800 roundabouts in the entire country. This number is quickly evolving and changing due to constant road construction all across the country.
Every single year, the number of roundabouts in this country continue to grow due to the increased popularity of the traffic circles.
The states with the most roundabouts are as follows:
- Florida
- Washington
- Indiana
- Wisconsin
- North Carolina
- California
- Colorado
- Texas
- Minnesota
- Ohio
One of the Midwestern states in this list has the most roundabouts in the entire country!
The city of Carmel, Indiana is known as America's roundabout capital city.
Carmel has been working diligently since the 1990s to replace many of their "signalized intersections" with these traffic circles.
Ever since city officials have started implementing roundabouts, the number of accidents has reduced by 40% and accidents that result in injuries have gone down by 80%.
How Many Roundabouts Are There in Carmel, Indiana?
According to the most recent United States Census, approximately 100,000 people call the city of Carmel home.
With that many people, you can probably imagine that there has to be a whole lot of traffic congestion. The city combats that with more than 150 roundabouts.
To put this into perspective, the entire state of Iowa has more than 150 roundabouts, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation. Anywhere between ten to fifteen roundabouts are constructed every single year.
This one city in Indiana has just about the same number of roundabouts that the entire Hawkeye State has.
