The body of a man in his early 40s was pulled from the Cedar River in Cedar Rapids early Friday evening.

According to a media release from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, an emergency call came in just before 5:30 p.m. Friday afternoon of a man who had gone under in the Cedar River and hadn't resurfaced at O Avenue and 1st Street NW.

The Cedar Rapids Fire Department sent a Battalion Chief to the scene, along with a rescue company, truck company, and three engine companies.

After meeting with a witness, the first crew on scene was able to determine a man had been swimming in the Cedar River, started to have a difficult time, and went under. The witness was able to tell emergency crews that the man had gone underwater close to the intersection of 1st Street and O Avenue NW in Cedar Rapids, less than 10 feet from the shoreline. The location is near Cedar Rapids' Time Check neighborhood. The photo at the top is from 1st Street NW at O Avenue.

Rescue personnel then searched the shore while three search boats went into the river. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says the body of a deceased man was found about 30 minutes into the search. He was located about 15 feet from the shore in approximately 10 feet of water.

The Cedar Rapids Police Department and Area Ambulance Service also assisted at the scene.

The man's name has not been released, pending notification of relatives.
