Has Kate Martin Already Betrayed Iowa?!? [WATCH]
It's been a heck of a year for former Iowa Hawkeyes Caitlin Clark and Kate Martin.
Not only did these talented players lead their teams to a NCAA national championship AGAIN, but they were both selected in the WNBA Draft.
Clark was the first overall pick and is now set to play for the Indiana Fever whilst her friend Kate "the Glue" Martin was drafted eighteen overall to the Las Vegas Aces.
It was a total surprise for Martin, who attended the draft to support her friend and teammate Caitlin Clark.
Preseason Roasting
WNBA training camp began at the very end of April. Each team played at least one preseason game so they could get a feel for the new team roster.
In the Las Vegas Aces final preseason game before final cuts were made, one player tried to have some fun with the rest of her teammates.
The two-time defending WNBA champions played against the Puerto Rico National team on Saturday, May 11th in South Carolina.
They played in Colonial Life Arena, which is the home stadium of the University of South Carolina.
It also is the alma mater of Las Vegas Aces star and two-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson.
She's a BIG deal in Gamecock country. There is even a statue of the 27-year-old player on campus.
There were several players decked out in the iconic South Carolina colors as they walked into the game on Saturday.
This included;
- Kiah Stokes ~ UConn
- Jackie Young ~ Notre Dame
- Megan Gustafson ~ Iowa
- Chelsea Gray ~ Duke
- Kate Martin ~ Iowa
Of course, Martin's loss against South Carolina is still a little fresh. Iowa played against the Gamecocks in the NCAA National Championship barely a month ago. This was the game that ended Martin's college career.
Somehow, she still took this all in stride! Also, can we talk about how the players were still well-dressed and that the outfits definitely fit with each woman's personality.
If this is the energy that the WNBA culture has, I cannot wait to see what the rest of the season holds.
Opening night of the official season is set for Tuesday, May 14th with four games.
New York Liberty will take on the Washington Mystics at 6:00 PM and the game will air on ESPN 3.
Indiana Fever will take on the Connecticut Sun at 6:30 PM and the game will air on ESPN 2.
Phoenix Mercury will take on the Las Vegas ACES at 9:00 PM and the game will air on ESPN 2.
Minnesota Lynx will take on the Seatle Storm at 9:00 PM and the game will air on ESPN 3.
The fact that there are only twelve teams in the WNBA and some of these games overlap is ridiculous to me, but whatever.
