According to a press release from Hy-Vee, the ham giveaway is part of their Hams for the Holidays campaign. This will be the fourth year for the initiative where Hy-Vee employees alongside local first responders, including law enforcement, fire, and EMS, will hand out 5,000 Hormel Cure 81 hams to families in need throughout 14 cities. With 2020 being a rough year, this event will surely bring some relief to families struggling.

Hams for the Holidays will be happening March 24 through March 31, prior to Easter Sunday on April 4. Families in need in the Cedar Rapids area can pick up their free ham on Wednesday, March 31 starting at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium, located at 950 Rockford Road SW. Due to the pandemic, the hams will be loaded into vehicles to minimize contact and ensure social distancing. Also, all those handing out the hams will be wearing gloves and face masks.

The Hams for the Holidays giveaway will last for up to two hours or until all of the hams have been distributed (whichever comes first). Hams will also be distributed in Ottumwa, Sioux City, and Des Moines. You can find out more information on the event on Hy-Vee's website here.
