Four Different Things You Didn’t Know You Could Recycle
They say the average American throws away about five pounds of trash every single day. Here are four things you probably didn't know you can recycle.
1. Sneakers. Nike has a program called Reuse-A-Shoe. It grinds old shoes up and uses the material for other stuff, like artificial turf. Nike's website shows you the closest place you can drop your old shoes off.
2. Brita water filters. A company called Preserve melts down the plastic, and uses it to make stuff like toothbrushes, plastic cups and cutting boards.
3. Bras. Go to BraRecycling.com to find out where you can drop off your unwanted bras. You can also mail them in.
4. Light Bulbs. Not a lot of people know that you aren't supposed to throw away the new compact fluorescent light bulbs because they contain mercury. Many recycling centers are now accepting them and so does Home Depot.
