The singer turned talk show host is using her platform to showcase a whole lot of good in the world.

Kelly Clarkson recently returned to the airwaves after the conclusion of the writer's strike last month at its new home in New York City. This daytime talk show seems to be only growing stronger after five seasons, and there's no sign of it slowing down anytime soon.

Of course, the 'American Idol' winner has the typical celebrity guests on her show, but she's doing something a little bit different to showcase the good some people are doing in their communities.

The team behind 'The Kelly Clarkson Show' have been searching all across the country for "humans going above and beyond for their neighbors" as part of their Good Neighbor of the Year contest.

Several different non-profit organizations from all over America have been highlighted in this segment, with twelve of them breaking through as finalists. One of them just so happens to be from the great state of Iowa.

Based in Des Moines, Families Forward is an organization that provides both short and medium-term housing for families while helping them build financial independence.

Families Forward has been providing "compassionate, life-changing assistance to families on their path to self-sufficiency," for more than one hundred years now.

The Executive Director Tim Shanahan has been appearing on the show to represent the organization. During his first appearance on the show, Shanahan received a $20,000 check from Kelly Clarkson and the Conagra Brands Foundation.

In one of the more recent episodes of the program, the Executive Director spoke about an experience that really shook him during his time at the organization. He told a story about how he ran into a little girl fifteen years ago in the kitchen of Families Forward who recognized him.

It turns out that this little girl was his daughter's classmate.

"I thought I'd seen it all," the man said.

Clarkson was visibly emotional and impassioned by this true story.

she said.

"Open your eyes and forget about your world just for one second," the 'Since U Been Gone' singer explains as she raises a tissue to wipe her tears away.

If you would like to help the Des Moines non-profit win the title of Good Neighbor of the Year make sure to go to the 'Kelly Clarkson Show' Instagram. You can place your vote in the page's Instagram story.

Voting for this contest will close on Friday, November 10th.
