If the weather allows, a segment of U.S. Highway 63 in Waterloo that's been closed for nearly two years will be open to traffic again Friday afternoon.

The reconstruction of Logan Avenue between Franklin and Newell Streets is nearing completion, Iowa Department of Transportation officials said in a news release Thursday afternoon. While the road will reopen, the sidewalk and bike trail on the west of the new overpass will remain closed until next week to allow for the installation of a handrail.

The road work on that segment of U.S. 63 began on March 5, 2018. During the past 17 months, workers demolished an old pedestrian bridge and railroad structure that crossed above the highway. Construction crews then built a new bridge to carry U.S. 63 over the Canadian National railroad and replaced the pedestrian bridge with an underpass.

The project between Franklin and Newell Streets is the final part of a larger scale, multi-year project to reconstruct U.S. 63 in Waterloo from the northern edge of the city to U.S. Highway 218 downtown.
