During a time like a pandemic, it is important not only for all of us to practice social distancing to keep others safe but also to learn how to lend a helping hand to those in our community to keep them safe. Times like these bring people together and show us some of the unsung heroes in our community such as Shirley Thode of Cedar Falls.

According to KWWL, 81-year-old Shirley Thode of Cedar Falls has been doing her part to help out her community during the pandemic. And by doing her part I mean doing a huge part such as making and donating over 2,000 masks to the community! That's right, since March Thode has been making masks to donate to people in her community as well as to health care facilities such as MercyOne, Cedar Valley Hospice, People's Clinic and more. This has take over 500 hundred hours of work and Thode has used 173 yards of fabric.

She has said it helps to keep her busy as she is avoiding going out in public and has helped others stay safe in the community. Well done Shirley Thode and thanks for being an unsung hero in the community!
