Waverly-Shell Rock Falls In Overtime; Third Place Game Next

The Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks fell one game short of the Class 3A championship game at the Iowa High School Boys State Basketball Tournament.They lost an overtime battle to Cedar Rapids Xavier, 47-41, in the semifinals Thursday evening (March 9, 2017).

It was a tight game that saw both teams matching basket-for-basket throughout the first half. Xavier jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the first period, but Waverly-Shell Rock never let the Saints get any further ahead until the final seconds of overtime.

W-SR took a 16-14 advantage into the locker room at halftime, then built the largest of the game at 19-14 early in the third quarter.

The Saints held a 30-29 lead as the fourth period got underway. The offensive pace slowed over the final eight minutes of regulation. Waverly-Shell Rock scored the final bucket of the period, sending the game to overtime deadlocked at 38-38.

Xavier finally took charge in the extra period. The Saints outscored Waverly-Shell Rock 9-3 during the four-minute session to secure the 47-41 win and advance to the Class 3A championship game.

Up next for Waverly-Shell Rock, the Go-Hawks will play West Delaware for the third-place trophy in the consolation final on Saturday (March 11). Tip-off is set for 12:05 PM at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
