Two Waterloo men were arrested on weapons charges following a downtown traffic stop in the city early Sunday.

Police took Dandre Gantt, 21, into custody on two counts of carrying weapons. Choroin Smith, 23, was also arrested on three counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and three counts of carrying weapons. According to court records, Smith is prohibited from having firearms due to previous felony convictions for willful injury, intimidation with a dangerous weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.

The traffic stop occurred near West 5th and Jefferson Streets around 2 AM. Waterloo police said officers observed an AK47 assault rifle in plain view in the vehicle during the traffic stop. They also discovered that Gantt was in possession of two concealed semi-automatic handguns.

Police seized the three weapons, all of which were loaded.
