For the second time this season and the fourth time during his junior hockey career, the United States Hockey League named Cal Petersen its Reebok Goaltender of the Week on Monday.

During the two games following the USHL’s holiday break, Petersen backstopped Waterloo to a pair of wins.  On Friday, the Waterloo native made 27 saves, and every one of them was vital as the Hawks edged the Chicago Steel 2-1.  Petersen was less than a minute away from his fifth career shutout; the Steel goal came with 40.2 seconds left in regulation.  On the road in Cedar Rapids the next night, Waterloo prevailed 6-2 as the Notre Dame recruit turned away 14 shots.

Nearing the midway point of his second full season with the Hawks, Petersen ranks second in league wins with 15.  His 2.44 goals-against average and 91.9% save percentage are both within the USHL’s top six.  During the course of 58 regular season appearances in his career, the Buffalo Sabres’ draft pick has 39 wins, a figure which ranks second during the franchise’s junior era, behind only Matt DiGirolamo’s 47.

Petersen joins defenseman Mark Friedman as a two-time USHL Player of the Week during the 2013/14 campaign.  The Black Hawks goalie was also recognized on December 2nd.  At least one Waterloo player has been among the league’s award winners during four of the last five weeks, with Hawks winning awards on eight total occasions throughout the season.

Waterloo will attempt to round out December with one more strong performance on Tuesday versus the Lincoln Stars.  Tickets for the New Year’s Eve contest are still available by calling the Domino’s Black Hawks Box Office or online from waterlooblackhawks.com.  The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
