[PHOTOS] Waterloo Honors Veterans with Unveiling of Stirring Memorial
It was a big week in the city of Waterloo.
Not only did Waterloo residents re-elect Mayor Quentin Hart for another term in office on Tuesday, but a new memorial was unveiled to honor veterans on Thursday (November 9th).
During the state of the city address at the Waterloo Convention Center, the mayor discussed some important issues and projects as well as major achievements for the city over the past year.
One of the big priorities for this administration over the next year is continuing the work on the Waterloo fiber system. According to reports, this project has been in the works for several years now.
It is expected to be a three-phase project that will take a few more years to complete. City officials claim that once the new fiber system is all set up, it will cover hundreds of miles of fiber internet.
One of the other major happenings at this evening's event was a special Veterans Day dedication. After the conclusion of the address, event attendees went outside to watch the unveiling of the new Sullivans Brothers Memorial and plaza.
After changing the name of the convention center from Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center to the Waterloo Convention Center, local officials still wanted to find a way to honor these veterans.
So, now right outside of the convention center stands the Sullivan Brothers Memorial which resides right on a plaza with the same name.
On Monday, it will have been 81 years since the sinking of the USS Juneau during World War II; as well as the death of the five Sullivan Brothers who were originally from Waterloo.
This was the greatest loss in a single family in U.S. wartime history, according to reports.
