State Tourney Berths At Stake For Oelwein, Crestwood Girls Basketball Teams

Oelwein and Crestwood are one victory away from the girls state basketball tournament. The Northeast Iowa Conference rivals can both earn a trip to Des Moines if they win their regional championship games tonight (Saturday, February 22, 2014).

Oelwein (14-8) faces 3rd-ranked Clear Lake (21-2) at Charles City at 7 p.m. 2nd-ranked Crestwood (20-2) plays Mount Vernon (15-8) at Independence, also at 7 p.m.

Oelwein has won three-straight games and seven of its last 10 heading into tonight's meeting with the Lions. With a victory, the Huskies would earn their third trip to state in school history and first since 1993. Clear Lake hopes to extend a seven-game winning streak and earn its first trip to Des Moines since 2002, the school's only previous tournament appearance.

Crestwood hasn't been to state since 2003 and is in position to qualify for only the fourth time in school history. Mount Vernon has also been to state three previous times, making back-to-back trips in 2010 and 2011.

Class-4A and Class-5A regional semifinal games are also being played across Iowa tonight. In Class-4A, Waverly-Shell Rock hosts Charles City and West Delaware travels to Epworth to face Western Dubuque. In Class-5A, Cedar Falls plays at Mason City and Waterloo West hosts Ames at Robert Siddens Gymnasium. The regional semifinal games all begin at 7 p.m.
