Should Halloween 2024 be Postponed this Year in Iowa?

As a kid, I remember the excitement that my friends and I would have when Halloween would fall on a weekend. Personally, I loved when Halloween was on a Friday.

Not only did we get to go to class dressed up in our costumes and have a little spooky party, but we also didn't have to worry about going to sleep at a reasonable hour because there was no school the next day!

You got the best of both worlds.

However, it was always a drag when Halloween was on a Wednesday or worse...a Monday!

Unfortunately, Halloween falls on a Thursday this time around, so everyone will have to get back to work or school the next day.

A few years ago, there was a movement to change the actual date that Halloween is celebrated. This petition started by the  Halloween and Costume Association gained traction back in 2018 and has 158,132 signatures as of October 2024.

The goal of this petition is to shift the day that all of the haunted happenings take place to the last Saturday in October.

Why Do Some People Want to Change Up Halloween?

One of the main reasons for the change is safety.

According to reports, when Halloween is on a weeknight the amount of fatal crashes involving children increased by approximately 83%. Also, pedestrian involved crashes increase by 55%.

If trick or treating were to take place on Saturday then the holiday festivities could begin in the daylight hours.

Will Iowa Adopt This?

While it’s unlikely Iowa will adopt this national movement anytime soon, you can still enjoy plenty of Halloween fun in our community. Check out the list of local events here.

The dates and times for trick or treating in most cities in our neck of the woods have already been set.

Cedar Falls and Waterloo's trick or treating will both take place on October 31st from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm.
