In December we reported that this area favorite would return to downtown Waterloo in 2021. Now after a seven-year hiatus, Doughy Joey's Peetza Joynt has re-opened its doors and its old location on the corner of West 4th and Jefferson streets.

In April of 2014, previous owners Chuck and Joanna Landau made the decision to downsize their personal business and sold the Waterloo location. Last year, after 10 years of business in the Cedar Falls location, (off Highway 58 across from Blains Farm & Fleet) Doughy Joey's was closed and demolished, many fans of the restaurant were shocked to see it get torn down. Construction of a new Dupaco Community Credit Union is now underway on that site.

All that's left of the Cedar Falls location is the giant sign (on the front of the building) with the iconic Doughy Joey's logo on it and a lot of memories. Now, new owners, Andrew Howe and Alison Blake are set to make new memories and make this former location their own.

Former owner/founder Chuck Landau sold the business to Howe

After working for Landau for 12 years, six of those managing Landau's Waterloo Brown Bottle restaurant, Howe was offered a licensing agreement to operate the business. Howe and Blake now have complete control of the restaurant.

Renovations were needed

After sitting vacant for seven years, many updates were needed. Howe and Blake had the walls repainted, installed new floors and seating, and had the kitchen expanded.

When talking to Blake, she mentioned that some of the former employees from the Cedar Falls location have come back to work for them. They are also still looking to add to their staff, go to their Facebook page for more information.

MORE FOODIE STUFF - The Best Burritos In The Cedar Valley - Photos/List

This radio station took a (very) informal poll on our Facebook page and here's a list of the most popular places in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area to wrap your hands around a giant delicious burrito. You'll notice that they're listed in alphabetical order because it's hard to say that one is better than the other. Except for those cheap frozen burritos you can find in your grocer's freezer, those are truly disgusting. Especially, when you compare them to these local creations made with fresh ingredients and tender loving care. There's a surprising amount of fantastic Mexican restaurants in the area, let's check them out.
