Construction is getting underway on a new high school in Cedar Falls.

District officials have scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday afternoon. The new school is being built along West 27th Street near the UNI-Dome on nearly 70 acres of land formerly owned by the University of Northern Iowa.

The new building is expected to be ready for classes in the fall of 2024. The 300,000 square-foot structure will replace the current high school on Division Street, which has been in use since 1954.

Total cost of the construction project is estimated at almost $112.8 million.

Voters approved a bond issue to finance most of the work. The $69.9 million referendum passed in June 2019.
