Country singer Lauren Alaina is part of a wildly diverse, and perhaps even controversial, group of contestants competing on the new season of ABC's Dancing With the Stars. The "Road Less Traveled" singer and one-time American Idol runner up was announced on Wednesday morning (Aug. 21).

Good Morning America revealed the news, including that Mary Wilson (of the Supremes) and Ally Brooke (of Fifth Harmony) will be musicians joining Alaina. Other celebrity dancers include Bachelorette Hannah Brown, Queer Eye star Karamo Brown, former NBA player Lamar Odom, actor James Van Der Beek, model Christie Brinkley, former NFL linebacker Ray Lewis, actress Kate Flannery, comedian Kel Mitchel and Sean Spicer, the former White House Press Secretary.

Alaina becomes the seventh country singer to join Dancing With the Stars. Country radio deejay Bobby Bones also was a contestant in 2018, eventually becoming the second winner with country music roots.

Country Stars Who Went Dancing With the Stars, Worst to Best:

The related drama that comes with this season's cast should make for exciting breaks between dance performances. Odom is notorious for cheating on his wife, Khloé Kardashian. Lewis was found guilty of obstruction of justice with regards to the stabbing deaths of two men in 2000 and is in general a dynamic, inspiring or brash personality. Spicer was President Donald Trump's media representative for many months, becoming one of the most loved (or hated) men in America along the way. These characters are polarizing, to say the least.

Alaina's personal backstory includes a battle with an eating disorder and more recently, the end of a lengthy engagement. She's now dating comedian John Crist. Outside of the music she's known for her cheerful personality and puns on Twitter.

The new season of Dancing With the Stars begins on Sept. 16. For the first time, the pairings will not be revealed until the season premiere.
