A 14-year-old boy has been arrested on charges that he fired a gun toward officers with the Hiawatha Police Department.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Hiawatha police were called at around 6:38 a.m. to the Big 10 Mart located at 1225 Boyson Road. The initial report was of a "young man in the store with a gun", according to a press release from the Hiawatha Police Department.

When officers arrived at the store a short time later, they were immediately shot at by the teen. He has since been identified as 14-year-old Christopher Troy McDaniel. An address was not provided, according to the Gazette. McDaniel fired at least twice from behind cover according to the press release. He eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. Officials did not say how many police officers responded to the scene.

The Gazette reports that McDaniel was taken to the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center where he faces the following charges.

  • attempted murder of a police officer
  • third-degree burglary
  • third-degree theft
  • possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime
  • carrying weapons by a prohibited person

The Hiawatha Police Department was assisted by the Linn County Sheriff's Office, Cedar Rapids Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Iowa State Patrol.
