It May Shock You When You See Cedar Rapids’ Safety Ranking
If you had to guess where Cedar Rapids ranks for safest cities in America, where would you put the city? Would you guess near the top or the bottom out of 180 cities in the country? As someone who's lived in Iowa for less than a year, I've really enjoyed finding out so many different things about Iowa and the cities/towns that make up this state. I've always felt pretty comfortable being out and about and I was pleasantly surprised to find out this about the second-biggest city in Iowa.
When thinking of how safe a city is you might jump straight to the crime rate, assaults, or theft, but there are other factors that go into how safe a city is. How much traffic is there? Cities loaded up with citizens lead to an increased number of traffic accidents.
You could be concerned with how cities have handled the covid-19 pandemic. According to Wallet Hub, one of the biggest concerns for a lot of people right now is the cost of inflation, which has reached a four-decade high.
Wallet Hub compared the safety of 180 cities across America. They used a giant number of indicators to determine how safe each city was. By giant number, I mean they used 42 different indicators. The 3 key indicators are Home & Community Safety, Natural Disaster Risk, and Financial Safety. You might be pleasently surprised to see where Cedar Rapids ends up on this list.
Out of the 180 cities, Cedar Rapids found itself near the top of the safest cities in America. The second most populated city in Iowa was ranked as the 22nd most safe city in the country.
Cedar Rapids was the 28th-ranked city for home and safety, and the 32nd for financial safety. Had it not been for natural disasters, Cedar Rapids would likely found itself in the top 20. Out of the 180 cities studied, Cedar Rapids was ranked 101 for natural disaster risk. No surprises there as we learned last week that Iowa has lost billions from natural disasters going back to 1980.
It may seem like we're always reading or seeing bad stories in the news, but citizens and visitors of Cedar Rapids can take comfort in knowing it's actually a pretty safe place, for the most part. I have a fiance who works in Cedar Rapids and while you can't exactly avoid every dangerous scenario you'll find yourself in, it's a good feeling knowing that other than scary weather, she's pretty safe on a daily basis. From your experience do you agree with Wallet Hub's findings? If you live in or visit Cedar Rapids, do you feel safe for the most part?
