Iowans are known for a few things: we work hard, we play hard, and we don't keep the "9-5" schedule.

We also have some... unique words and expressions we enjoy using.

Today, we'll celebrate 11 of 'em. We say many of these daily or seasonally. When we say them in front of non-Iowans, especially non-Midwesterners, we get weeeeird looks.

A lot of the 11 words/phrases on this list lean rural. I compiled them from things I've heard from my in-laws, who farm in NE Iowa.

These expressions aren’t just quirky sayings.

They’re a kind of Midwestern shorthand for everyday life, whether you're navigating a snowstorm, bumping into someone in the Hy-Vee aisle, or firing up the grill before an Iowa game.

Sure, some of these might overlap with our Midwestern neighbors, but others are uniquely Hawkeye.
