Iowans are known for a few things: we work hard, we play hard, and we don't keep the "9-5" schedule.

We also have some... unique words and expressions we enjoy using.

Today, we'll celebrate 11 of 'em. We say many of these daily or seasonally. When we say them in front of non-Iowans, especially non-Midwesterners, we get weeeeird looks.

We Know When and How To Use These Phrases

From "Ope!" to "I s’pose," Iowa is full of phrases that outsiders may not recognize, but locals know exactly what they mean (and when to use them).

They’re a kind of Midwestern shorthand for everyday life, whether you're navigating a snowstorm, bumping into someone in the Hy-Vee aisle, or firing up the grill before an Iowa game.

And no matter how many times you hear them, they never get old, just like Grandma’s bars and small-town gossip.
