Who’s Next? Waterloo to Appoint New Police Chief
Earlier this month, Waterloo Chief of Police Joe Liebold, retired from the force after thirty-four years with the WPD.
The search for a replacement for his position is going much faster than anticipated.
According to a press release from the City of Waterloo, a candidate has already been found! This is pending approval at the next Waterloo City Council meeting on Monday, July 1st, 2024, at 5:30 PM.
Waterloo city officials announced that WPD Captain Rob Duncan is anticipated to take on the role of Chief of Police.
“Captain Rob Duncan has proven himself to be a dedicated and effective law enforcement leader in our community. Serving in the Waterloo Police Department for nearly 30 years uniquely positions him to lead the force as chief," said Mayor Quentin Hart, City of Waterloo.
"We are excited to be at full staff and look forward to the new chapter in Waterloo’s policing history. We will continue to build bridges while creating an even safer Waterloo."
Who Is Captain Rob Duncan?
Currently, Rob Duncan is a police captain for the WPD.
He has been with the department since 1997. Over the course of his twenty-seven-year career with the Waterloo Police Department, he worked his way up from patrol officer to Division Commander of Patrol.
In 2004, he was named Waterloo Police Officer of the Year.
Duncan serves on the boards of the Human Rights Commission as a liaison, Child Protection Center at Allen Hospital, and the executive board of the Waterloo Police Protective Association.
The Waterloo native has an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Gateway Community College.
