The website Mattress Advisor conducted a survey of over 1,000 adults asking them if they thought drinking helped you them sleep. The results?

  • 55% of respondents feel like they get a good night’s sleep after having booze. It turns out that although alcohol can make you drowsy and help you fall asleep, it actually harms your sleep quality through the night.
  • 25% of this same group reports experiencing restlessness and waking up often throughout the night after drinking.
  • 23% feel like they 'sleep hot' after drinking.
  • 18% regularly experience nausea or vomit after drinking.

The sleeping issues people reported aren’t a surprise to experts. Alcohol may help you feel drowsy and you fall asleep easier, but the quality of the rest really suffers, particularly in the second half of the night. The main issues tie back to changes in your heart rate, the REM rebound effect, and the suppression of melatonin production, all a side effect of alcohol.

So this New Years as your party it up, be sure you leave plenty of extra time to sleep in and make up for the lousy quality rest you'll likely get after drinking.
