Three goals in the opening minutes of the third period boosted the Omaha Lancers past the Waterloo Black Hawks, 4-3, at Young Arena on Saturday, October 24, 2015.

Waterloo led 2-1 when the final 20 minutes began, but Mitch Perrault evened the score just 1:16 after intermission. Less than two minutes later, Nathan Krusko fired a shot to the top corner while skating across the high slot. That go-ahead goal put Omaha in front for good, and the lead was secured at 5:10 when Brannon McManus flipped in a breakaway backhander.

The Hawks drew within one with 12:04 left to play when Brandon Schultz set up a one-time rocket by Yuri Terao stationed just inside the right circle. Both teams had limited chances in the time which remained. The 14 total shots taken during the third represented the smallest count in any of the frames. For the night, Waterloo outshot Omaha, 35-26.

In the first period - moments after an early Black Hawks power play ended - the Lancers were called for icing, and that had led to the only goal during the stanza. At 4:47, Cameron Orchard won a faceoff back to Alex Robert, and his low shot changed directions on the way to the net, flying past the glove side of goalie Zack Skog.

The teams exchanged goals in the middle 20. One second after a Lancer power play ended at 3:44, Nick Rivera fired a slithering shot into the net from the right circle. However, Waterloo reassumed the lead at 13:30; Hunter Luhmann followed up a transition chance and found a loose rebound in the crease behind Skog. Luhmann dunked the puck for the go-ahead goal.

Skog turned in 32 saves for the win, while Cale Morris suffered the loss with 22.

After hosting an opponent from Nebraska, that’s where the Black Hawks are headed next. Waterloo visits the Tri-City Storm in Kearney on Thursday and Friday for their next United States Hockey League games.
