Entering Friday night, the Waterloo Black Hawks sat second in the United States Hockey League's Western Conference trailing the Sioux City Musketeers by three points. The Musketeers also led the way in the Anderson Cup Standings awarded to the team with the best regular season record. Eastern Conference leading Chicago Steel sat second in the race for the best record.

On Friday, The Hawks sprung to the lead in the second. Alex Limoges tied the game at 10:36, setup in the slot on a pass from Ben Copeland which had originated behind the Capitols goal. On a power play just over a minute later, the puck came to Limoges at the top of the crease; stickhandling Lebedeff down, the Hawks forward flipped in his second goal.
Shane Bowers added another on a subsequent power play at 16:34, redirecting Grant Gabriele’s shot from the right point.
In the third, the Caps got back within one at 9:36 when Andong Song’s shot was deflected through traffic by Vincent De Mey at 9:36. However, just over seven minutes later, Copeland sealed the win, stuffing in the rebound of Bowers’ wraparound try.
