Black Hawks Split Over the Weekend at Tri-City-Home Game Tues. Night

Waterloo gained two more points in their quest to try to climb in the rankings in the USHL's Western Conference with another thrilling overtime victory on Friday night. However, they couldn't "weather the storm" on Saturday night getting down by a large margin.

Saturday night at Tri-City
According to a team game re-cap: the Tri-City Storm pushed to a five-goal lead before stifling a Black Hawks comeback bid in a Saturday night matchup that finished 5-2 at Viaero Center in Kearney, Nebraska. The Storm had three first period power plays and cashed in on two of them. In the 2nd period, Waterloo created reason for optimism. Skating four-on-four, Matt Argentina went to the net to shovel in a loose puck. About one minute and half later, Ethan Szmagaj scored on a power play goal. However, the Storm prevented a comeback, despite an early 3rd period leg injury to their starting goalie Connor Hopkins.

Friday night at Tri-City
For the third time in their last four games, Waterloo went to overtime and came out on top, beating the Tri-City Storm 3-2 Friday night. Like each of the prior OT wins, it took a 3rd period comeback to force the extra frame. Trailing 2-1 late in regulation, Michael LaStarza’s pass set up Alex Gaffney who beat the USHL’s top netminder Todd Scott inside the post to his left. Owen Ozar then scored the game winner in overtime. A Storm defender had lost his stick, allowing Ozar a chance to blast his shot under the crossbar for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Matt Argentina had struck for the game’s first goal, the only goal of the 1st period, flipping in a backhander. Glockner earned his 9th win of the season by stopping 22 shots.

Back at home on Tuesday night
The Black Hawks are back home at Young Arena for their next game Tuesday night versus the Omaha Lancers at 7:05 p.m. Fans can take advantage of a “Two for Tuesday” offer with two "Attack Zone" tickets and two Chick-fil-A sandwiches for $22, available online only here.

Honoring veterans and all active military personnel this weekend 

According to a team press release: for more than a decade, the Black Hawks have honored those who have served in our nation’s Armed Forces by wearing a patriotic or military-themed jersey  (see photo above) during an annual weekend dedicated to veterans. This season, that weekend will be Saturday, March 13th and Sunday, March 14th.

In past seasons, the organization honors veterans in mid-November around Veterans’ Day or on Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.  However, due to the uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic, and postponed games, the team has moved their "Veterans Weekend" to March.

"It was not possible to follow the typical schedule this season, but I have no doubt that Black Hawks fans will respond enthusiastically, and hopefully many of our former servicemen and women will be able to be with us next weekend.”  said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene

Live bidding for the sweaters will be conducted following Saturday’s game, (the team will still wear the jerseys Sunday). The auction will benefit the Miehe Veterans Transitional Home in Waterloo. The facility is administered by Americans for Independent Living and offers accommodations for servicemen in need. Its goal is reducing veteran homelessness in Black Hawk County.

The Black Hawks will also recognize current and former service personnel with free admission to both games. Veterans’ tickets will be available to pick up from the box office in person on each game day. Seats for all 11 remaining Black Hawks home games  are on sale now  and available here.

Fans are reminded that face coverings are required to attend Black Hawks games, in compliance with Waterloo’s continuing mask mandate. Doors open one hour prior to game time.
