The record breaking season continues as yet another record falls for the 2013-2014 Waterloo Black Hawks. Their next win clinches the USHL Western Division.

The Waterloo Black Hawks earned their 40th win of the season – a new franchise record – with five power play goals Friday during a 7-2 decision at Young Arena against the Des Moines Buccaneers.

The Hawks could not have drawn up a better start to the contest. Brandon Montour’s shot was blocked 28 seconds after the opening faceoff, but the puck landed in front of Zach Sanford who spun and slipped a follow-up along the ice past goalie Ryan Ruck. It was the first shot on net during the game. Hayden Shaw score the Black Hawks second goal less than five minutes later.

Patrick Russell, Tyler Sheehy, Mark Friedman, & Jake Horton all scored goals. Montour added a second goal to his night's tally.

Also Friday, the Omaha Lancers lost in a shootout, 3-2, against the Muskegon Lumberjacks. That moved the Black Hawks to within one point of clinching the USHL Western Conference championship. The Indiana Ice topped the Dubuque Fighting Saints 5-4 Friday, so Waterloo remains two points behind Indiana for first place overall in the league.

There’s more hockey at Young Arena Saturday. The Hawks stay on home ice to host the Sioux Falls Stampede at 7:05. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a 2004 Clark Cup commemorative poster, courtesy of Karen’s Print Rite. Tickets for the 7:05 contest are on sale from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling the Black Hawks Box Office at (319) 291-7680.
