Many deer in Iowa have been found dead in fields, and wooded areas over the last number of months. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has the reason they believe this has been the case. According to a statement, there is a virus that’s killing hundreds of deer right now and it seems to be mainly concentrated in Warren County (south of Des Moines).

The DNR says Iowa is experiencing an outbreak of epizootic hemorrhagic disease or EHD.

As of late August, well over 400 deer have been found dead, but the DNR expects that number to increase as hunters begin to venture out into the woods for the hunting season and find more dead deer.

EHD is a virus spread by flies that causes high fever and organ issues. Infected deer usually die within a few days.

More information on deer hunting season can be found on the DNR's official website.
