UNI wrestler Blaize Cabell earned conference honors after knocking off the top-ranked heavyweight in the Mid-American Conference.

On February 5, 2015, it was announced that Cabell was awarded the honor, and he is the first Panther to earn MAC Wrestler of the Week honors this season.

The junior from Independence, Iowa, grabbed a 3-1 decision in sudden victory over Missouri’s Devin Mellon on Jan. 31. This was the second time Cabell had topped two-time NCAA qualifier Mellon this season. He notched the first win at the UCM Open for third place this year.

Cabell hasn’t lost a match since Dec. 6 and has won his last nine matches. Three of Cabell’s four losses this season have been to wrestlers ranked in the top 11.

Cabell was pushed up to 10th in the NCAA rankings after taking down No. 7 Ty Walz of Virginia Tech on Jan. 16.

Cabell is now 20-4 overall and remains unbeaten in the MAC at 5-0.

The honor also earned him the top ranking in the MAC when rankings were released yesterday.

NEXT UP: The Panthers are on the road this weekend with duals at Ohio 6 p.m. CT Friday and Kent State noon CT Sunday.
