The University of Northern Iowa volleyball squad used a 3-1 triumph to dismiss the Indiana State Sycamores on Friday, November 14, 2014 in the McLeod Center. UNI won by set scores of 25-20, 25-12, 25-27, 25-17.

UNI moves to 18-9 overall and 12-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play. Indiana State falls to 17-10 overall and 9-6 in league action.

UNI posted a 10-4 lead early in the first set only to see Indiana State rally and knot the set at 15-15. UNI did not relinquish the lead and took a 19-16 advantage. Indiana State closed to within 20-19 before UNI closed out the set win with a 5-1 run, 25-20. UNI’s Kinsey Caldwell tallied 12 assists, four digs, two blocks and two kills in the initial set.

The Panthers wasted little time in taking control with a 9-1 spurt to begin the second set. UNI opened up a double-digit lead and cruised to a 25-12 win to take a two-set lead. Kayla Haneline led the way in the second with five kills on seven attacks. Caldwell added 15 more assists, two kills and two digs. UNI was able to sideout at an 84 percent clip in the second set.

Indiana State refused to go away quietly and hung on for a 27-25 victory in the third set. The Sycamores led 11-9 early in the set. UNI used a 4-0 to take a 15-12 lead. However, Indiana State would take a 17-16 advantage. Hingtgen recorded a kill to knot the set at 23-23. UNI had a set point at 25-24, but Indiana State scored the final three points of the set to take it, 27-25.

UNI closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set. Indiana State led 7-6, but a 4-0 UNI run gave the Panthers the lead for good. Indiana State would get as close at 16-13, however UNI would extend the margin and eventually tallied the eight-point win in the final set. UNI posted a 72 percent sideout rate in the final stanza.

UNI will be back in action Saturday at 7 p.m. against MVC-leading Illinois State in the McLeod Center. UNI will honor senior Eryca Hingtgen prior to Saturday night’s match.
