Three Iowa Horses Could Be Champions At the Kentucky Derby

On Saturday, May 6th more than 150,000 people will be flocking to Louisville, Kentucky for the 149th annual Kentucky Derby. 

Three of these horses come from Iowa AND they are from the same stable. Albaugh Family Stables, is a Des Moines based racing operation run by Jason Loutsch and Dennis Albaugh. Albaugh actually mortgaged his home to start his own pesticide company, according to the official American Best Racing website.

The three horses that these owners have in the race are Angel of Empire, Jace's Road, and Cyclone Mischief.

All have had an incredible year.

Cyclone Mischief

One of the last horses added to the lineup for the Kentucky Derby, this horse just was able to make it in. Another horse named Practical Move was set to make it to the starting gate for this weekend's race, but then was scratched. Thus, making room for Cyclone Mischief to secure a spot, according to horse racing outlets.

He is the most recent addition.

This three-year old colt was sired by Into Mischief out of the Bernardini mare Areyoucominghere. He has placed in the Fountain of Youth Stakes and Florida Derby.

Angel of Empire

Angel of Empire is one of the horses that people are counting on possibly winning. The odds on him are 8-1, according to CBS. He has what is considered one of the "most undesirable posts" at Churchill Downs, so analysts are hoping that his pedigree and tactical speed can overcome that.

The three-year-old horse won both the Risen Star Stakes and Arkansas Derby races this year.

Jace's Road

This horse is a three year old colt and has raced at Churchill Downs, Ellis Park, Fair Grounds, Oaklawn Park.
