Small Tornado Causes Damage In Cedar Rapids
Storms that moved across eastern Iowa Wednesday night produced a small tornado that damaged some manufactured homes in Cedar Rapids.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), one person suffered minor injuries when the tornado hit Summit View Village, a mobile home park on the southwest side of the city around 9:15 PM. Firefighters reported damage to at least two trailer homes, one of which had the roof torn off.
An NWS team surveyed the damage in Cedar Rapids Thursday morning. Officials determined that a weak EF-0 tornado briefly touched down. They estimated maximum winds were around 85 MPH.
No severe weather warnings were issued for Linn County or any part of the state Wednesday night. The storm system dumped about 0.66" of rain in Cedar Rapids, 0.67" in Iowa City and 0.21" in Waterloo.
The small tornado in Cedar Rapids is the second one reported in Iowa this spring.
On March 23, the National Weather Service reported that a weak tornado touched down in southeast Iowa's Lee County. The brief tornado -- also rated an EF-0, with winds estimated at 80 MPH -- caused roof and tree damage and destroyed a shed at a rural residence about three miles north of Fort Madison.
