I think it's safe to say a huge number of Iowans sleep with a fan running all night. I'm guilty of it.

When the weather is hot, like it is now, a fan can feel good and cool you down. Not to mention, you get used to the white noise.

But if you're a person who sleeps with a fan running, have you ever paused to consider any potential health risks?

Experts Warn Against Sleeping With a Fan On

I'll be the first to admit I like the sound and the breeze. But while the sound doesn't add any health risks, the breeze sure does.

Here in Iowa, we experience all four seasons, sometimes in a single day.

The consistency of the fan, to help cool in the summer and move warmer air in the winter, is usually more than welcome.

Beware of Increased Allergy Issues

Fans stir up pollen, dust, and allergens, blowing them around your room while you sleep.

If you're prone to hay fever or asthma, this can lead to morning sneezes, coughing, and serious congestion.

No one wants to start their day feeling tough like that, right?

You Could Experience More Aches, Pains, and Dryness

Here's one you probably never thought of... increased pains.

Blowing cool air directly on your body overnight can cool your muscles too much, leading to you waking up with a stiff neck or cramps.

It can also dry your skin, eyes, and nasal passages, potentially triggering irritation, sore throat, or even excess mucus. No thanks...

These issues certainly won't lead to waking up feeling refreshed.

It Might Disrupt Your Sleep

Although your body cools itself naturally to prepare for sleep, an overly cold environment from a fan can interrupt that process.

The result? Fragmented sleep and less restorative "deep" rest. Less REM sleep is unhealthy.

While it's not on the list, it does cost money to run a fan all night. Maybe a lot less than blasting your AC, but there is still a cost involved.

Old habits die hard. As I write this, it's unlikely I'll be able to part with my fan every night. But I'm certainly going to try to use it a lot less.
