Nothing will fire up an Iowa driver like a good old-fashioned roundabout. They aren't necessarily everywhere in the state of Iowa but they are slowly becoming a lot more common. When it comes to roundabouts, I feel like most Iowans are pretty much divided right down the middle. You either like them or you absolutely hate them.

I'm probably in the minority here but I tend to prefer a roundabout as opposed to a 4 way stop light. You usually have less congestion on the road and you don't have to sit and wait for the dreaded 4-way red light, which tends to be the longest-lasting red light.

I'll probably catch hell for this but I don't understand what's so hard about looking left, entering the roundabout when it's safe, and driving in a circle until you need to turn right and exit. The cars in the roundabout have the right of way and the cars entering the roundabout need to wait until it's clear to go. That's a story for a different day.

Should You Use Your Turn Signal At A Roundabout?

If everyone who enters a roundabout is going to go right, do Iowans need to worry about using turn signals when using a roundabout? According to Iowa DOT, yes, you should use them.

While it may be less important to use a turn signal when entering a roundabout, you should still signal your turn. The Iowa DOT says it's especially important when you're going to exit a roundabout. "This allows vehicles waiting to enter the roundabout to know your intentions."

You should just use your turn signal every time you're getting ready to change lanes or turn onto a different road. It takes about 1 second to show other drivers what you're planning on doing or where you're intending to go. Back in 2017, KWQC reported Iowa drivers were some of the worst in the country in using turn signals. Even if you think using your turn signal at a roundabout is a waste of time, it will always be smarter to signal, than it will too not.

Hilarious Iowa DOT Signs

Anyone else share a sense of humor with a state's Department of Transportation? Just me? Well, every Monday the Iowa Department of Transportation puts up a sometimes hilarious, sometimes straightforward message on their road signs across the state. This is called "message Monday" and Iowa DOT tries to entertain and educate drivers through these signs. Here are just a few of our favorites.

What Non-Iowans Think of Iowa

Iowa is the capital of the Midwest! Ok, that's unofficial, but it's my stance. Here's what NON Iowans think of us.
